Integration and application across content areas

Calvert’s 2nd Grade curriculum fully immerses your child into the world of independent reading. Using delightful phonics storybooks and reading anthologies, your child will develop strong reading comprehension skills to last a lifetime. In addition, your child will explore the world of Science as you perform hands-on activities and investigate units on heat, light, rock properties, the human heart, and more. Travel through time and around the world In Calvert’s Social Studies course as your child learns about old-world figures, geography, and maps.

Math

Students perform complex addition and subtraction, manipulate and measure geometric figures, develop skills with money and measurement, represent data, and work with numbers through the thousands.

Language Arts

Phonics storybooks and reading anthologies reinforce word analysis techniques and develop comprehension skills. Simultaneously, students begin writing dictated words and sentences, learn punctuation and spelling rules, and start to express ideas in original compositions.

Science

Students study heat, light, forces, the properties of rocks, the heart and lungs, plants, animals, and habitats.

Social Studies

Biographies of old-world figures, inventors, and leaders in American life expand an understanding of the world.

Geography

Students learn about exact and relative location, boundaries, and regions while continuing to build basic map skills.

Technology

Typing, spreadsheets, internet, and e-mail skills are used.

Art

Students develop skills in drawing and studying famous paintings.
